Sapa Entry Requirements

Sapa Entry Requirements

Visa, immigration, and customs information

Important Notice Entry requirements can change at any time. Always verify current requirements with official government sources before traveling.
Information last reviewed June 2024. Always verify with official government sources before traveling.
Touching down in Sapa starts with Vietnamese immigration at Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi, then rolls on by overnight train, limousine van or the new highway. Inside the terminal the humid air presses against your skin while you shuffle beneath flickering fluorescents, rubber soles squeaking on polished floors, jet-fuel tang mingling with steam from instant noodles at a nearby café. From there it is five hours northwest to Sapa, slicing through limestone karsts and terraced rice paddies, with officers inspecting onward tickets at Lao Cai station or the Sapa bus terminal. Most arrive as tourists, so keep that e-visa print-out crisp, border guards slide each page under blue scanner lights while pine scent drifts through open doors.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Vietnam runs a three-tier system for Sapa: visa-free, e-visa, and embassy visa. The rules stay the same whether you fly into Hanoi or cross at Lao Cai land border from China.

Visa-Free Entry
15 to 45 days depending on nationality

Citizens of selected countries can enter Vietnam visa-free for tourism and proceed directly to Sapa

Includes
Germany France Italy Spain United Kingdom South Korea Japan Sweden Norway Denmark Finland Russia Belarus

Single-entry only; a gap of at least 30 days between visa-free visits is enforced

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA/eVisa)
30 days single-entry

Nationals not on the visa-exempt list must obtain an e-visa online prior to arrival

Includes
United States Canada Australia New Zealand India China Brazil Mexico South Africa
How to Apply: Apply through the official e-visa portal (evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn). Upload passport bio page and passport photo. Processing time is three working days.
Cost: Single-entry e-visa costs approximately the same as a mid-range dinner in Sapa

Print two copies. One is collected on arrival, the other on departure

Visa Required
30 or 90 days, single or multiple entry

Travelers whose nationality is ineligible for e-visa, or those seeking longer stays, must apply at a Vietnamese embassy or consulate

How to Apply: Submit passport, application form, photo and flight itinerary to the nearest Vietnamese diplomatic mission or reputable visa service

Embassy visas are stamped into the passport before travel. Allow one week for processing

Arrival Process

Whether you ride the night train that rocks you to sleep under thin blankets or take the new expressway van that swooshes past sugar-cane fields, your passport will be checked twice: once at the immigration booth in Lao Cai city and once at the Sapa district police checkpoint on the final climb up Fansipan Road.

1
Arrival at Noi Bai Airport (Hanoi)
Follow yellow signs to Immigration Hall. Queues snake between blue ropes. Officers stamp passports beneath chilled air-conditioning while coffee aroma wafts from upstairs mezzanine cafés.
2
Lao Cai Station or Border Gate
If arriving by train from China or by bus from Kunming, present e-visa print-out and arrival card at the glass-fronted immigration hall. The scent of diesel and grilled corn drifts from nearby stalls.
3
Sapa District Checkpoint
Police board buses and trains 30 km before Sapa town. Officers wearing olive-green uniforms shine flashlights onto passport pages while cool mountain air pours through open doors.

Documents to Have Ready

Passport
Must be valid for six months beyond entry date and contain at least two blank pages
E-visa Approval Letter or Visa Sticker
Present printed e-visa or original visa sticker at each checkpoint
Arrival/Departure Card
Distributed on inbound flight or at land border. Keep bottom portion for departure
Onward Ticket
Bus, train or flight confirmation showing exit from Vietnam within allowed stay

Tips for Smooth Entry

Keep boarding pass stub from Hanoi, Lao Cai flight. Officers sometimes request it to match ticket numbers
Write your Sapa hotel address clearly on the arrival card. Vague entries trigger secondary questioning
Arrive at checkpoints before 7 a.m. to avoid tour-bus convoys and shorten waiting time

Customs & Duty-Free

Customs inspections at Lao Cai train station and Sapa bus terminal are swift but strict. Green channels feed directly to waiting vans. Red channels funnel to a small room where officers in khaki uniforms open suitcases beneath humming strip lights.

1.5 litres of spirits above 22% ABV or 2 litres below 22% ABV plus 3 litres of beer
