Sapa sits high in the mountains of northern Vietnam, and that elevation (around 1,500-1,600 meters) gives it a climate that's refreshingly cool compared to the rest of the country. You'll find four distinct seasons here, which is actually pretty unusual for Vietnam. The dry season runs roughly from October through April, with minimal rainfall and crisp, clear days that make the terraced rice fields look absolutely spectacular. May through September brings the wet season, though even then the rainfall isn't overwhelming—it just means you'll likely see afternoon showers and more persistent fog rolling through the valleys. Winter (December through February) can get genuinely cold, especially at night when temperatures drop to around 8°C (46°F), and you might even see frost on the higher peaks. Spring and autumn are probably the sweet spots weather-wise, with comfortable temperatures in the high teens to low twenties Celsius and relatively dry conditions. Summer stays surprisingly mild for Southeast Asia—you're looking at highs around 23-24°C (73-75°F)—though the increased rainfall and humidity can make trekking a bit muddier. Worth noting that Sapa's weather can be unpredictable regardless of season, with fog and mist rolling in without much warning, which is part of its moody mountain charm but does mean you should pack layers.

Best Time to Visit

Beach & Relaxation
Sapa isn't really a beach destination—it's mountain country through and through. If you're looking for relaxation, the cooler months (October-April) offer pleasant weather for enjoying the town's cafes and spa hotels.
Cultural Exploration
September through November is ideal, as you'll catch the rice harvest season when local ethnic minority communities are most active in the fields, plus the weather is comfortable for visiting villages and markets.
Adventure & Hiking
March through May and September through November offer the best trekking conditions—dry enough that trails aren't muddy messes, but not so cold that you're uncomfortable outdoors for hours at a time.
Budget Travel
June through August sees fewer tourists despite being summer, which means better deals on accommodation. The rain is manageable, and you'll have a more authentic experience without the crowds that descend in autumn.

What to Pack

Year-Round Essentials

Rain jacket or waterproof layer
Mountain weather is unpredictable, and even in the dry season you can get caught in unexpected showers or heavy mist.
Comfortable walking shoes with good grip
You'll be doing a fair bit of walking on uneven terrain, and trails can be slippery even when it hasn't rained recently.
Light fleece or sweater
Evenings are cool year-round at this elevation, and you'll want an extra layer even in summer.
Sunscreen and sunglasses
The sun can be surprisingly strong at this altitude, especially when you're out trekking all day.
Reusable water bottle
You'll need to stay hydrated while hiking, and it's better for the environment than buying plastic bottles constantly.
Basic first aid kit
Blisters, small cuts, and scrapes are common when trekking, and you won't always be near a pharmacy.
Power bank
You'll be taking loads of photos, and charging opportunities can be limited when you're out in the villages.
