Sapa is a popular tourist destination in northern Vietnam, located in Lao Cai Province. As part of Vietnam, travelers must comply with the national entry and immigration regulations. All international travelers to Sapa typically arrive via Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) in Hanoi or by land from China, and then travel onward by road or train. You will pass through Vietnamese immigration and customs at your official port of entry, not in Sapa itself. It is important to ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay and that you have the appropriate visa or travel authorization before arrival, as entry requirements are strictly enforced. Upon arrival at a Vietnamese airport or land border, you will present your passport, completed entry/exit form, and visa (if required) to immigration officers. Your passport will be stamped with an entry date, which marks the beginning of your authorized stay. Sapa itself does not have separate checkpoints for international visitors; local authorities may occasionally check your passport and visa during your stay, so always carry a copy with you. Planning your visa in advance is the single most important step for a smooth trip to Sapa. Before traveling, check the latest requirements, as policies can change. The climate and terrain in Sapa are mountainous, so while not an entry requirement, ensuring you have appropriate travel insurance covering medical evacuation and trekking activities is highly recommended.

Visa Requirements

Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.

Vietnam's visa policy applies uniformly to Sapa. Requirements depend on your nationality, length of stay, and purpose of visit. Many travelers now use the convenient eVisa system.

Visa-Free Entry
Varies by nationality (e.g., 14, 15, 21, 30, 45, or 90 days).

Citizens of certain countries can enter Vietnam for tourism without a visa for a limited period.

Includes
United Kingdom France Germany Italy Spain Most Nordic countries Japan South Korea ASEAN countries (e.g., Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia)

Visa-free stays are typically for tourism only. The duration is strict; overstaying results in fines. Passport must usually have at least 6 months validity. Some nationalities (like UK, FR, DE, IT, ES) get 45-day visa-free entry as of August 2023. Always confirm exact duration for your specific nationality.

Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA/eVisa)
Up to 90 days, single entry.

The Vietnam eVisa is a single-entry visa obtained online before travel. It is available to citizens of all countries, including those previously requiring a traditional visa.

Includes
All nationalities are eligible for the eVisa.
How to Apply: Apply online at the official Vietnam Immigration Portal. You will need a digital passport photo and a scanned copy of your passport data page. Typical processing is 3-5 working days, but apply at least 2 weeks in advance. You will receive an electronic visa (PDF) to print and present upon arrival.
Cost: Approximately USD $25 (subject to change).

The eVisa is valid for entry via designated international airports, land borders, and sea ports. Check the official list of entry points. The eVisa start date is fixed; you must enter on or after that date. Double-check all information on the eVisa PDF for accuracy.

Visa Required
Varies (30 days, 90 days, single or multiple entry).

Travelers from countries not eligible for visa-free entry and who do not wish to use the eVisa (e.g., for multiple entries or longer durations) must obtain a visa from a Vietnamese embassy or consulate.

How to Apply: Apply in person or by mail at a Vietnamese embassy or consulate in your home country. You may need to submit an application form, photos, your passport, and a fee. Some embassies offer a 'Visa Approval Letter' service where you get a pre-approval letter online, then pick up the visa stamp on arrival at a Vietnamese airport (Visa on Arrival).

The 'Visa on Arrival' (with pre-arranged approval letter) is ONLY for air travel into major international airports (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, etc.). It is not available at land borders. Using a reputable agency for the approval letter is common. You will need the approval letter, entry form, photos, and cash (USD) for the stamping fee upon arrival.

Arrival Process

You will go through immigration at your first point of entry into Vietnam (e.g., Hanoi's Noi Bai Airport). The process is standard for the country.

1
Arrival and Form Filling
Upon disembarking, proceed to the immigration area. You may need to fill out an Entry/Exit Form (may be provided on the plane or at kiosks). Some airports have digital kiosks for this. Have your passport, visa (or eVisa printout), and completed form ready.
2
Immigration Queue
Join the appropriate queue ('Foreign Passport'). Present your documents to the immigration officer. They will scan your passport, check your visa, and may ask simple questions about your stay (e.g., purpose, duration, accommodation).
3
Passport Stamping
The officer will stamp your passport with an entry stamp, noting the date. This stamp is critical; check that the date is correct and corresponds to your visa validity. Do not lose the stamped departure form if a separate slip is given (now often integrated into the passport).
4
Baggage Claim and Customs
After immigration, collect your baggage and proceed through the Green (Nothing to Declare) or Red (Goods to Declare) customs channel. Your luggage may be scanned.

Documents to Have Ready

Passport
Must be valid for at least six months beyond your intended date of departure from Vietnam. Must have at least one blank page for the entry stamp.
Vietnamese Visa
Either a visa sticker/ stamp from an embassy, a printed eVisa, or a Visa Approval Letter + photos + stamping fee for Visa on Arrival (air only).
Completed Entry/Exit Form
Required for all arrivals. Often integrated digitally, but a paper form may still be required. Fill it out accurately.
Proof of Onward Travel
Immigration may ask to see a return ticket or ticket showing onward travel out of Vietnam within your authorized stay.
Proof of Accommodation
You may be asked for the address of your first night's stay (e.g., hotel booking confirmation).

Tips for Smooth Entry

Print multiple copies of your eVisa, passport data page, and hotel bookings. Keep one set with you and another in your luggage.
Have USD in cash for the visa stamping fee if using Visa on Arrival. Small, new bills are preferred.
Be polite and patient at immigration. Answer questions clearly and concisely.
Double-check your entry stamp before leaving the immigration counter. Ensure the date matches your day of arrival.
The journey from Hanoi to Sapa is 5-6 hours by road or train. Plan your arrival in Vietnam accordingly to avoid late-night travel to Sapa.

Customs & Duty-Free

Health Requirements

There are no mandatory vaccinations for entry into Vietnam for most travelers arriving from non-endemic zones. However, recommended vaccinations and health precautions are important, for travel to rural areas like Sapa.

Required Vaccinations

  • Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving from a country with risk of Yellow Fever transmission.

Recommended Vaccinations

  • Routine vaccinations (MMR, Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis, Varicella, Polio, Influenza)
  • Hepatitis A & B
  • Typhoid
  • Japanese Encephalitis (recommended for travelers spending extensive time in rural areas, during the rainy season)
  • Rabies (for travelers involved in outdoor activities or who may have contact with animals)
  • Measles

Health Insurance

While not mandatory for entry, complete travel health insurance is highly recommended. It should cover medical treatment, hospitalization, and emergency evacuation, important for trekking in Sapa's remote areas. Some hospitals in Vietnam may require proof of insurance or upfront payment.

Current Health Requirements: As of May 2024, there are no COVID-19 vaccination, testing, or quarantine requirements for entry into Vietnam. This is subject to change, so check official sources (e.g., IATA Travel Centre, Vietnamese Embassy) for any updates before departure.

Special Situations

Additional requirements for specific circumstances.

Traveling with Children

Children must have their own passport. If traveling with only one parent or without parents, it is highly recommended to carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s) or legal guardian(s). This is not always checked but can prevent delays at immigration.

Traveling with Pets

Pets (dogs, cats) require an Import Permit from the Vietnam Department of Animal Health. They must have a valid rabies vaccination certificate (administered at least 30 days prior to entry) and a veterinary health certificate issued within 7 days of travel. Pets may be subject to quarantine upon arrival. The process is complex; start well in advance.

Extended Stays

If you wish to stay longer than your visa allows, you must apply for a visa extension before your current visa expires. This can be done through a local travel agency or visa service in major cities like Hanoi. Overstaying your visa results in fines (currently VND 500,000 per day, up to a maximum) and potential difficulties exiting or re-entering Vietnam. It is illegal to overstay.
