Sapa Entry Requirements
Visa, immigration, and customs information
Visa Requirements
Entry permissions vary by nationality. Find your category below.
Vietnam's visa policy applies uniformly to Sapa. Requirements depend on your nationality, length of stay, and purpose of visit. Many travelers now use the convenient eVisa system.
Citizens of certain countries can enter Vietnam for tourism without a visa for a limited period.
Visa-free stays are typically for tourism only. The duration is strict; overstaying results in fines. Passport must usually have at least 6 months validity. Some nationalities (like UK, FR, DE, IT, ES) get 45-day visa-free entry as of August 2023. Always confirm exact duration for your specific nationality.
The Vietnam eVisa is a single-entry visa obtained online before travel. It is available to citizens of all countries, including those previously requiring a traditional visa.
Cost: Approximately USD $25 (subject to change).
The eVisa is valid for entry via designated international airports, land borders, and sea ports. Check the official list of entry points. The eVisa start date is fixed; you must enter on or after that date. Double-check all information on the eVisa PDF for accuracy.
Travelers from countries not eligible for visa-free entry and who do not wish to use the eVisa (e.g., for multiple entries or longer durations) must obtain a visa from a Vietnamese embassy or consulate.
The 'Visa on Arrival' (with pre-arranged approval letter) is ONLY for air travel into major international airports (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, etc.). It is not available at land borders. Using a reputable agency for the approval letter is common. You will need the approval letter, entry form, photos, and cash (USD) for the stamping fee upon arrival.
Arrival Process
You will go through immigration at your first point of entry into Vietnam (e.g., Hanoi's Noi Bai Airport). The process is standard for the country.

Tips for Smooth Entry
Customs & Duty-Free
Vietnam has standard customs regulations. Declare all items over the duty-free allowance or items that are restricted/prohibited.
Prohibited Items
- Illegal drugs and narcotics - severe penalties including death
- Firearms, ammunition, explosives, and military equipment
- Pornographic materials
- Items against Vietnamese culture and traditions
- Certain wildlife products protected by CITES (ivory, rhino horn, etc.) without permits
Restricted Items
- Medications, prescription drugs - bring in original packaging with a doctor's prescription. Some controlled substances may be illegal.
- Plants, seeds, soil, animals, and animal products require quarantine permits from the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture.
- Cultural artifacts and antiques require export permits from the country of origin and import permits from Vietnam.
Health Requirements
There are no mandatory vaccinations for entry into Vietnam for most travelers arriving from non-endemic zones. However, recommended vaccinations and health precautions are important, for travel to rural areas like Sapa.
Required Vaccinations
- Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required if arriving from a country with risk of Yellow Fever transmission.
Recommended Vaccinations
- Routine vaccinations (MMR, Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis, Varicella, Polio, Influenza)
- Hepatitis A & B
- Typhoid
- Japanese Encephalitis (recommended for travelers spending extensive time in rural areas, during the rainy season)
- Rabies (for travelers involved in outdoor activities or who may have contact with animals)
- Measles
Health Insurance
While not mandatory for entry, complete travel health insurance is highly recommended. It should cover medical treatment, hospitalization, and emergency evacuation, important for trekking in Sapa's remote areas. Some hospitals in Vietnam may require proof of insurance or upfront payment.
Protect Your Trip with Travel Insurance
Complete coverage for medical emergencies, trip cancellation, lost luggage, and 24/7 emergency assistance. Many countries recommend or require travel insurance.

Special Situations
Additional requirements for specific circumstances.
Children must have their own passport. If traveling with only one parent or without parents, it is highly recommended to carry a notarized letter of consent from the non-accompanying parent(s) or legal guardian(s). This is not always checked but can prevent delays at immigration.
Pets (dogs, cats) require an Import Permit from the Vietnam Department of Animal Health. They must have a valid rabies vaccination certificate (administered at least 30 days prior to entry) and a veterinary health certificate issued within 7 days of travel. Pets may be subject to quarantine upon arrival. The process is complex; start well in advance.
If you wish to stay longer than your visa allows, you must apply for a visa extension before your current visa expires. This can be done through a local travel agency or visa service in major cities like Hanoi. Overstaying your visa results in fines (currently VND 500,000 per day, up to a maximum) and potential difficulties exiting or re-entering Vietnam. It is illegal to overstay.
